On the Couch with Jarred Wall

Jarred Wall AAR On the CouchWho is Jarred Wall?
I’m a Noongar (Wadandi Bibbulmun) singer songwriter and producer, performing as Boox Kid who dabbles in cross-genre work in both opera and theatre. I’m committed to promoting Aboriginal Culture and all the great things our people have to offer. I love my friends and I’m a father of two amazing girls who will be far better performers than I’ll ever be.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I had the flux capacitor from Back to the Future, I’d go back in time and finish my music studies just so I could be more proficient on writing and reading scores or perhaps taken advantage of the opportunities I had when I was a touch younger

Who inspires you and why?
Musically I’d say the likes of Stevie Wonder and Bowie. I love their storytelling and Stevie has such a good sense of melody. Closer to home, it’s Gina Williams! She’s amazing at preserving Noongar language and storytelling. More personally though, it’d be my kids. I have 2 girls who I strive to be a role model and better person for.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
As a Noongar man, self-determination for mob is something I always advocate for. I love my culture and truly think it is a gift to this country. I’m grateful for the opportunity to preserve language and to also have the opportunity to perform in language in productions like Wundig wer Wilura – so the more I can contribute to this and showcase it the more Australia will recognise its importance.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
This is a tough one. I loved Fiji, but also loved my backpacking days in Europe. San Sebastian in Spain was always a favourite!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
If it’s metro, I’m a big fan of South Freo. I love it down there. If it’s WA though; you are spoilt for choice from the Kimberley to the South West.

What are you currently reading?
I don’t read enough. I have a book on my bedtable around fathering that I should be digging into but otherwise I’ve been busy reading the Wundig Wer Wilura script.

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve been smashing the Wundig Wer Wilura score, getting myself prepped for rehearsals. I also love digging into albums as opposed to playlists, so the last month I have also been obsessed with Omar Apollo.

Happiness is?
Spending time with family n friends. I love connection. Playing with my crew (Johann, Anthony and Paul) and being on stage is pretty amazing, so mix that altogether, along with some hangs in South Freo and it’s pretty sweet.

What does the future hold for you?
I’m releasing an EP as Boox Kid in March/April 2024 – so I am looking forward to how that will be received and perhaps some touring and festival circuits. January and February 2024 also have me in the midst of Wundig Wer Wilura rehearsals. The show runs during Perth Festival and I honestly feel it will be amazing. Songs and storytelling in Noongar language that have never been heard before. It’s all pretty special!
