On the Couch with James Galea

James-Galea-photo-by-Cameron-RadWho is James Galea?
For a living, I create magic and music, and combine them for entertainment. Sometimes that’s on TV, other times in theatres. I love both of them and excited to be back in Australia to entertain audiences on home soil again.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I wouldn’t change much. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to live out my dreams and make them a reality this last decade.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired people who just get things done. I have many friends in different industries and I’m constantly in awe of their ability to get on with it against all obstacles. In the arts specifically, I think we’re constantly challenged with moving goalposts, so I’m really inspired by those who find creative ways to kick goals and get their work seen and heard.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
It’s easy to think “if/when I have this/that, I’ll be able to…” – so, I use what I have to make a difference (however small). For now, that is by making people happier with my talents, if only for moments in time.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
There’s so many. I’ve been incredibly lucky to be able to constantly travel to amazing destinations around the world for work, but that’s not technically a holiday. So, top of the list of places I love where I don’t take a laptop to work is Yosemite National Park. That is real magic!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
It depends which city I’m based in (though it’s always centred around food – that’s the real attraction). I’m currently in Sydney, so it’s usually coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte (it’s a pretty special part of the world), ending up at Ducks for breakfast and some Iggy’s to take home.

What are you currently reading?
Honestly, I’ve had Sapiens on my desk for 5 months, and have been bypassing it to read friends’ books. Currently reading Here Is Real Magic by my mate Nath Staniforth.

What are you currently listening to?
Podcast-wise, I just finished Hollywood Con Queen this morning and loved it. It’s pretty insane and strange. Less insane than Tickled (doc) and Dirty John, but certainly worth your time. Music-wise, I’ve been loving being in close proximity to Australian music again – currently, Ben Abraham’s new tunes are making my heart sing (yours will too).

Happiness is?
Coming to Adelaide for Cabaret Festival to do POOF! Secrets of a Magician for all the lovely people.

What does the future hold for you?
I’ve just finished a premiere season at the Opera House with BEST TRICK EVER, and will be touring POOF! Secrets of a Magician this year. I also just shot a scripted comedy I co-created/co-wrote that is set on a cruise ship, so am looking forward to people finally being able to see it. In the immediate future, I’m stoked to be going to Adelaide Cabaret Festival to be surrounded by such great company. It’s going to be pretty wild.

James will present POOF! Secrets of a Magician in the Dunstan Playhouse – Adelaide Festival Centre from 11 – 13 June as part of the 2021 Adelaide Cabaret Festival. For more information, visit: www.adelaidecabaretfestival.com.au for details.
