On the Couch with Jack Elliot Mitchell

Jack Elliot Mitchell AAR On the CouchWho is Jack Elliot Mitchell?
I am an actor living and working in Sydney. I also work for Currency Press during the week, and I feel pretty lucky to be able to work with scripts 9-5!

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Perhaps I would have pursued my university studies in English Lit further. I do miss the student lifestyle and getting to read and write a lot. But alas, HECS.

Who inspires you and why?
My wife Amy works in the incredibly demanding world of medicine. It’s such a tough gig that throws her a lot of curveballs, but she keeps on keeping on, making a difference in her patients’ lives even when it feels like there’s nothing to give.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Make more art – to entertain people in difficult times and challenge them in comfortable times.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
It’s hard to go past Blackheath NSW. We’ve got an old family home up there, and the autumn colours, misty weather and smell of firewood are magic.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
A walk and a swim somewhere around the Hermitage trail – great views all round. And a walk down King St Newtown, around where I grew up, to take in all the sights, smells and characters.

What are you currently reading?
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke.

What are you currently listening to?
The Rest is History podcast.

Happiness is?
A ripping evening at the theatre.

What does the future hold for you?
I’m hoping to finish my own script that I’m working on. It’s scary working on something so personal but it’s a gratifying challenge.
