Who is Greta Nash?
I’m a writer and director. I make up one third of the production company GGG Films. I like telling sensitive, character-driven stories, and will do so with any medium I can get my hands on. Film, however, is my first love. I like to think that I am dedicated, playful, curious, and sometimes funny.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I couldn’t be a writer or a director, I would have loved to be a historian who speaks multiple languages.
Who inspires you and why?
I’m a filmmaker primarily, I’m inspired by writer/directors who have unique, truthful perspectives and the ability to make me feel things very deeply. Filmmakers like Celine Sciamma, Hirokazu Koreeda, Andrea Arnold, Lukas Moodysson, Alice Rohrwacher, and Joachim Trier. I saw Sentimental Value at the cinema two weeks in a row. I’m also finally watching Slow Horses, and am currently inspired by Jackson Lamb’s colourful way with words.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
If it were up to me, I’d massively redistribute wealth and make it so that the elite can no longer act with impunity. Then I would encourage everyone who can to ride more bikes.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I’ve really enjoyed spending me behind the former Iron Curtain in Eastern Europe. Two weeks in Georgia in 2023 was a highlight. Fascinatingly complex history, incredibly hospitable people, jaw-dropping mountain landscapes, and some of the most delicious food on the planet. I think about mushroom Khinkali all the time, but it’s almost impossible to find here.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Nobody ever visits me. I am always the leech who visits people interstate/overseas! So, if you are a friend reading this, please come and stay in my house. I will take you to Cinema Nova and sit out on the balcony overlooking Lygon St, eat noodles at Master Lanzhou, visit the State Library reading room, and then go people watching at Jankara karaoke bar.
What are you currently reading?
I just finished Ordinary Love by Marie Rutkoski.
What are you currently listening to?
CMAT and Turnstile. Life is all about balance.
Happiness is?
Getting a bubble tea from the woman in Moonee Ponds who knows my order off by heart, and smuggling it into the cinema on a Tuesday afternoon.
What does the future hold for you?
I’m excited to dive back into Opera directing. Mary Motorhead and Trade is a double bill of two electric, powerful contemporary Irish Operas, and I’m excited to be working with ACOCO on bringing them to the Malthouse in March. I also recently finished a short film, DODGER, with my production company GGG Films, and the first draft of a novel.
Greta directs the Australian premieres of Mary Motorhead and Trade – which will be presented by the Australian Contemporary Opera Company at the Malthouse Theatre from 6 – 13 March 2026. For more information, visit: www.acoco.org.au for details.
