Who is Gregg Arthur?
An Australian vocalist who follows in the footsteps of Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé and Tony Bennett as one of the great interpreters of classic pop and jazz standards.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Music is my passion and always will be, but I also love to paint.
Who inspires you and why?
I admire everyone who is in the arts in Australia. You have to be incredibly determined and dedicated to your art just to exist. The fact that so many stick with it no matter how tough things get really is inspirational.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Continue what I’ve been doing all my adult life: Using honest lyrics and beautiful music to bring people together by celebrating what we all have in common and forget our differences while we get lost in the music.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Right now it’s Hobart, Tasmania. I spent a few days there with my beautiful girlfriend Lucy and it was stunning. Pristine and picturesque with incredible food, bars with amazing local wines and whiskey, and so much Australian history.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The Rocks and Circular Quay. Just walking around you see some of the most beautiful views in the world.
What are you currently reading?
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. It’s obviously timeless and brilliant, and definitely helping me focus on what’s important.
What are you currently listening to?
I love vinyl. A good friend, James Bright, just gave me a copy of a classic Verve release of Betty Carter. Absolutely incredible!
Happiness is?
A great band! I am blessed to work with the best musicians in the world.
What does the future hold for you?
Touring my concerts as much as possible here in Australia and overseas. I love to work hard, and enjoy entertaining audiences who share my passion for classic jazz standards.
Gregg takes to the stage with The Great American Songbook at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Friday 20 September 2024. For more information, visit: www.melbournerecital.com.au for details.
