Who is Gerard Schneider?
I’m a tenor returning to Australia after more than a decade abroad, with close to 20 years of international experience. I’m making my Opera Australia debut as the Prince in Rusalka – a role that’s become a signature for me overseas, and one I’m excited to finally bring home.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I don’t formally teach yet, but I really enjoy working with younger singers and offering guidance when I can. It’s something I’d like to do more of – helping the next generation find their footing in this career.
Who inspires you and why?
My mother has always been a deep source of inspiration. She introduced me to music from a very early age and encouraged me – sometimes pushed me! – to share it with others. Her belief in the power of music, and in me, shaped the course of my life. One of her favourites was Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid, which I (reluctantly) sang as a child. Now, having come full circle, I’m performing Rusalka – another take on that same story – and I often think of her when I sing it.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I hope I already am, in a small way, through music. Opera can be a powerful art form that both challenges and connects people. If I can remind audiences of that – and help other singers and creatives find their personal voices – I think that’s a worthy contribution.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Greece – especially Athens. I was obsessed with Greek mythology as a kid, so being surrounded by that history hits in a special way. I also really enjoyed visiting Beijing last year with my girlfriend – highlights included eating authentic Mongolian food in a yurt and seeing the Great Wall at night!
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’d kick things off with hotpot – nothing beats sharing great food and good vibes. Then, we’d hit a skatepark to get moving and keep the energy up. To finish the night, we’d go to a jazz club or outdoor concert – there’s something electric about live music that’s the perfect way to wrap up the day.
What are you currently reading?
Right now I’m reading The Book: The Ultimate Guide to Rebuilding a Civilization and the manga Chainsaw Man, which is a wild, entertaining ride.
What are you currently listening to?
Apart from my usual Tom Waits binging, I’ve been really into Joji, Chance the Rapper, and Thundercat lately. I also love The Eagles and The Beatles, and usually have a Japanese City Pop or ’70s singer-songwriter playlist on when I’m driving.
Happiness is?
Overcoming challenges that push you to your limits – where failure is a real possibility, but growth is always certain.
What does the future hold for you?
More music, I hope – continuing to evolve as an artist and as a person. I’ve been fortunate to receive so much help along the path, and now I’m focused on giving back in meaningful ways while embracing whatever new challenges come next.
