On the Couch with Georgie Aué

AAR-OTC-Georgie-Aue-by-Jess-CarltonWho is Georgie Aué?
I’m an arts lover, musician, wife/sister/daughter and events producer, who is (a little bit) addicted to caffeine and has a weakness for long afternoons curled up with a good book. I’m a vocalist/piano player, I love Brazilian music and devour everything to do with that genre of music. Other things I love are nature, moving my body every day, red wine and my beautiful staffy-furbaby – Frankie Nougat!

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’d approach everything with the mindset of being consistent. As I get older, I realise that consistency is key to everything – songs/compositions are written more often, physical and mental health is much better, stress is reduced.

Who inspires you and why?
Those I really admire and are inspired by the most are those who are courageous enough to try something different – perhaps that means starting a business, following a passion, or those who have such a strong sense of purpose that they never give up. I have found that there are many musicians who are so dedicated to their craft and have an insatiable appetite to continue refining and honing their skills over decades of effort and work. This completely inspires me.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Through my work as a musician and a Festival Producer, I hope I can help instill a deep appreciation for the arts and artists. The arts have such an impact throughout society – where would we be without music, good design or live performances?

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Poprad – Slovakia is somewhere that I always remember with a lot of happiness. I loved staying there – taking the tram up into the mountains every day, hiking the Tatry Mountains then devouring a delicious dinner in one of the many little restaurants at night. The most spectacular scenery with hot-spring baths – absolute bliss.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love Fremantle. It’s an old port city with dramatic period buildings and plenty of quirky bars, restaurants, and shops. It’s also got a groovy arts scene with the Fremantle Arts Centre and live music permeates throughout the township in great venues. I love that it is drenched in history and you’ve also got the working port that is raw and rough. It also has a great little beach – Bathers Beach with the whalers tunnel is also very cool. Something for everyone!

What are you currently reading?
I recently read Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe which I absolutely loved. I’m also bit by bit making my way through a Steely Dan biography – Reelin’ In The Years by Brian Sweet, which is a fascinating insight into their creative music making process.

What are you currently listening to?
I’m a bit obsessed with an amazing US vocalist, Cécile McLorin Salvant. Her new album Ghost Song is absolutely gorgeous and I’m a mad fan. I also keep listening to a fabulous album called Bluchanga by Brazilian composer/pianist, João Donato. The musicianship, arranging and compositions are excellent and right up my alley – groove, Brazilian and just so much fun. I keep discovering new things every time I listen.

Happiness is?
A healthy mind and body, nights in with my husband and Frankie but maybe above everything – get togethers with family and friends – nothing beats long, drawn out dinners with way too much food and everyone enjoying themselves.

What does the future hold for you?
Releasing my latest album Desert Cry over the next few months will keep me busy as well as delivering, as Producer, the Perth International Jazz Festival in November. Then I’ll be getting back into the composing/writing cycle! I can’t wait to start on the next music project!
