Who is Georgia King?
Well, I’m still trying to figure that out. Hopefully I never do. But for now, let’s say, a bit of an actor, a bit of a producer, a bit of a theatre maker… master of none maybe? I have a performance company with my partner, Mark Storen called Whiskey & Boots so I’m that (a bit whiskey a bit of a boot). And a middle-aged Sagittarian, 8 on the enneagram.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I love eating out, so I always thought a food/restaurant reviewer would be a great job! But in reality, I’m so fortunate to be able to do what I do, making shows that are full of heart, working with other amazing artists and telling stories of truly wonderful people that I would probably not get to meet otherwise. Pretty great when I put it on paper like that!
Who inspires you and why?
I work a lot in communities, and I’m constantly inspired by regular people who quietly get on with hard stuff when shit is thrown at them, overcome hardships, get themselves through without needing attention and praise. I love attention and praise so that is honestly inspiring to me.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
We all need to listen to each other better, especially people we disagree with. Trying to understand each other is the only way we can make any difference. I guess that’s why I do what I do, verbatim theatre is such a great way to encourage people to listen – sometimes I don’t agree with some of the values of people I talk to for a show, but I really believe it’s important that to expand our perspectives and realise we’re all mostly just doing our best.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Mark and I spent 2 months in France last year, a little for work a little for fun. Quite a bit of our time was spent in Paris and it’s hard for me to think of a city I prefer. I know Paris get a hard wrap sometimes, but I kinda love how straight forward Parisians are and how much they value the rituals of eating and drinking and beauty. Oh and there’s the cheese!
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Might be obvious but Perth beaches are pretty great, so Cottesloe doesn’t disappoint but Fremantle is a cool town – beaches, bars, live music. Then if you’re closer to the city PICA, AGWA, The Bird.
What are you currently reading?
Bee Sting by Paul Murray. I love Irish writers.
What are you currently listening to?
Super into audiobooks and just listened to Boy by Roald Dahl. I was a bit sceptical after it was recommended to me by my Mum, but it was really fun. Also, set largely in Cardiff where Mark and I spent some time last year. It’s always fun to read/listen about a place you’ve been.
Happiness is?
Inconsistent – so I think it’s probably healthy to realise this and don’t aim for it all the time. But in a practical sense, eating and drinking with friends brings me so much joy.
What does the future hold for you?
Getting ready for our show FOR THE BEST for Bondi Festival, collaborating with our friends Jeffrey Jay Fowler (The Last Great Hunt) and Luke Dux (The Kills Devil Hills) so that’s fun. Then heading to Auckland to do some work over there. I’ve never been to New Zealand so really looking forward to it. And beyond that? I’d love to do more travel for work (and fun).
