On the Couch with Gemma O’Brien

Gemma-O'Brien-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Gemma O’Brien?
I’m an artist & designer – specialising in patterns, typography, large-scale installations and elevating words to art.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
15 years ago I dropped out of law school and switched to a bachelor of design, if I could do it all again, I would have immediately switched to fine art. I think I’d also be happy as a florist, location scout or astrophysicist.

Who inspires you and why?
Recently, I’ve been really inspired by the paper wall paintings by Geoffrey Pithon at Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, the song I Wish It Was Me by Obongjayar and the experience of In Orbit by Tomas Saraceno at K21 in Düsseldorf.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Bring a little more joy and optimism to all.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Sydney in summer. When everyone else goes away.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Phoenix Central Park, Bronte Baths, Golden Age Cinema and Single O in Surry Hills to check out my new art bag: Gemma Espresso.
