Who is Evan Harris?
I’m a twenty-three year old jazz saxophonist and composer, residing in NYC. I love coffee and dogs that are taller than your shin, and have recently become interested in film photography.
What would you do differently to what you do now?
In a parallel universe, I think I’m an architect.
Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by anyone who is a mover and a shaker – those people who have a bold vision and work tirelessly to realise their goals. Elon Musk is a mover and a shaker. He’s determined to prove the sky’s no longer the limit.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Nicola Tesla said: Every living being is an engine geared to the wheelwork of the universe. Though seemingly affected only by its immediate surrounding, the sphere of external influence extends to infinite distance. Right now, my purpose is to make people feel something by playing music.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Iceland! Its landscape is completely alien, and not as cold as the name suggests (especially during Summer)!
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
A ferry ride on Sydney’s Pittwater. It’s a place of great beauty and tranquility, and to me it epitomises Australian beach culture.
What are you currently reading?
The Practice of Practice by Jonathan Harnum.
What are you currently listening to?
A friend introduced me to Kiwi double bassist Matt Penman’s Catch of the Day about six or so years ago. I met Matt in July, so once again his album is on high rotation. It was nice to put a face to the name, and to begin to understand the depth of his music and character.
A working saxophone reed!
What does the future hold for you?
My debut album will be recorded in 2017 at Systems Two in Brooklyn NY – my sincere thanks to the Australia Council for the Arts for their generous support. I’m really excited to make music with Sean Wayland, Des White, Jochen Rueckert and Will Vinson!
