On the Couch with Ember Flame

SOLO Ember Flame photo by Rachel MiaWho is Ember Flame?
I’ve given myself the mantle of ‘Australia’s Burlesque Poet’ as no one else has taken it. Another of my self-proclaimed titles is ‘Most Enthusiastic Late in Life Queer.’ I’m a performer based in Warrane/Sydney who combines stripping, storytelling, comedy, poetry and dance to find a way through the heaviness of the world and my own stubborn anxieties.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’d like to spend less time criticising myself and more time being present in my incredibly lucky life!

Who inspires you and why?
Performance artist Betty Grumble for her curiosity, daring and healing mantra of Thank You Body. The late poet and activist Candy Royalle for her unshakeable presence and truth. Sara Mansour, poet and co-host of the Bankstown Poetry Slam for her beautiful writing and tireless activism for Palestine.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Free us all from the systems of oppression that crush life and our connection to each other. Maybe after Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I will never forget the fairytale forests on the Overland Track in Tasmania. I’d love to see them again, but probably on a shorter walk.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Sydney Harbour – it’s disgustingly beautiful.

What are you currently reading?
Intermezzo by Sally Rooney. I love the compassion she has for her characters.

What are you currently listening to?
My track list for Solo and Sit Around the Fire by Ram Dass and John Hopkins.

Happiness is?
Friendship, bird song in the morning, a ripe avocado, interpretive dancing, spontaneous laughter, a queer dance party with big love energy.

What does the future hold for you?
More performing! Taking Solo to Newcastle Fringe Festival (21 – 23 March), The Mound near Dapto (12 April), and hopefully Edinburgh in August. I have two sisters and two niblings in Europe and I’d love to visit them enroute.

Ember Flame will present her show SOLO at the Little Reid Theatre at Goodwood Theatre and Studios from 27 February – 1 March, as part of the 2025 Adelaide Fringe. For more information, visit: www.adelaidefringe.com.au for details.
