On the Couch with Elizabeth Hay

Girl-From-The-North-Country-Elizabeth-HayWho is Elizabeth Hay?
Elizabeth Hay is excitable. Hopeful. Probably worrying about something. An actor. A mum. A partner, daughter, sister, aunty. Friend.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I could do anything, I’d be a Prima Ballerina, or the Prime Minister. Not sure I have the skill or discipline required for either job, though perhaps one demands more of that than the other.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m lucky to be in a job and work with incredible people who inspire me everyday. I really admire the work of people like Olivia Coleman and Gillian Anderson. They both possess a strength and integrity that I admire greatly, and their performances are always surprising. And they’re both so funny. If I were to ever meet either of them, I think I would melt into a puddle.

On a more local level, I’m inspired by my sister. She’s a midwife and a nurse, and I have so, so much respect for people who work in healthcare, especially right now. She is gracious and patient, and works really hard. I’m really proud of her.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think using the privilege I have to make others feel uplifted, seen, heard, safe and equal is vital. I hope to make others feel safe and welcome.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I love travelling, and gosh I’m hanging out to go on a holiday somewhere. I’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of the world through work. I loved holidaying in Vietnam, and can’t wait to get back there, this time taking my little boy.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I come from Adelaide, and I am always glad for an excuse to take visitors to the world class wine regions that surround our city.

What are you currently reading?
I’m reading Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney. I really loved her other two novels, Normal People and Conversations With Friends. I think she has a very particular voice, and I haven’t quite read anything like her work before.

What are you currently listening to?
I was thrilled to discover Bob Dylan’s Christmas album the other day, perfect timing! Other than that, we have a bedtime playlist for our baby that’s filled with lovely classical music hits that I really like, it’s a good wind down for us both.

Happiness is?
Sharing a meal with friends. A gooey chunk of cheese and a Barossa red. Fresh sheets at bedtime. Coming home to my baby at the end of a long day.

What does the future hold for you?
I don’t know, but I’m excited for it! I try to remind myself to be in the present, and be grateful for the moments I have here on earth, and for the people I get to share it with. Lucky me.
