Who is Elizabeth Brennan?
A performing, writer and action figurine that lives in the deep South-east of Melbourne. You may have seen her (and I mean, really seen her) cavorting about in a semi transparent fairy costume with the Australian Shakespeare Company or wheezing loudly while running on the spot in a Bloomshed show, but you are more likely to have encountered her eating a sandwich on public transport.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Teach yoga, probably.
Who inspires you and why?
My RSA instructor from 4 years ago. I wrote a lengthy poem about him actually, it’s called Ode To My RSA Instructor. A man determined to save lives rather than be popular and deliver information in a direct, humorous fashion. He made it interesting, he made it bizarre and he really, really cared. Otherwise, a whole bevy of Australian Artists that I fear would take too long to list as I’ve used up all the space on my RSA instructor.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I would like to commit to vegetarianism and participate in some more active conservation efforts.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Some sort of secluded rainforest with a pool and a magical snake repellent.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Probably the Dandenong Mountains, for food and views.
What are you currently reading?
Gone With The Wind. Bit of a shocking read, but extraordinarily well written.
What are you currently listening to?
The Lebron Brothers Orchestra… that’s been on fairly regular rotation. Also the Hair soundtrack, for obvious reasons.
Happiness is?
Trees, connection, having enough to eat, health and creative fulfilment.
What does the future hold for you?
How far into the future are we talkin’? I’ll hopefully continue to perform Shakespeare, host Murder Mystery parties and make my meagre living in rooms packed full of people, but in the short term a month of Hair is on the table. Can’t wait!
Elizabeth stars as Sheila in Australian Shakespeare Company’s production of HAIR – which plays Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre from 25 October 2025. For more information, visit: www.hairthemusical.com.au for details.
