Who is Duncan Rock?
I’m an Australian-raised opera singer now living in the UK. I’m here in Melbourne singing the role of Jan in Breaking the Waves with Opera Australia.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Everything we choose to do, or not do, forms the person we are today. You can’t change one thing without changing everything. No regrets, no changes. (Although if I could have bought some Apple stock in the 90s, that might have been a wise move).
Who inspires you and why?
I try not to draw too much inspiration from a particular person. Rather, there are character traits that I find inspiring in others – curiosity, openness, and a zest for life. In my experience people who hold these traits tend to do amazing things and inspire me.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I hope I make a small contribution through my work. I feel art not only provides entertainment and pleasure but allows people to increase their scope of empathy. It can help us to better understand each other and relate to each other. The story of Breaking the Waves is a challenging one and the decisions the characters make may not make obvious or immediate sense. To be able to see Jan (and the other characters) fail with the best of intentions can help us to be less judgemental and more understanding (hopefully!).
Favourite holiday destination and why?
We have a little place in the south of France. It’s the perfect place to relax, read and (of course) drink a lot of wine.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
My house! Our dinner parties are first rate.
What are you currently reading?
The psychology of money – Morgan Housel. If I were emperor of all galaxies I would take away some of the stigma surrounding talking about money, and I’d definitely have the subject taught more thoroughly in schools.
What are you currently listening to?
My Spotify says the My Little Pony: A New Generation soundtrack (I’d blame my kids… but honestly, the songs aren’t half bad)
Happiness is?
Morning cuddles with my daughters.
What does the future hold for you?
Since becoming a father I’ve started to balance my singing and travel with work as a spinal specialist physiotherapist. So I guess a little from column A and a little from column B. I’m still working on finding the right balance.
