On the Couch with Don Bridges

Equity Foundation Don BridgesWho is Don Bridges?
Actor, musician, director. Recipient of the 2026 Equity Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award and Vice President of the Victorian Actors’ Benevolent Trust.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I am very lucky in that, at my age, I don’t have to think about that. I have been a professional actor/musician since 1973. Prior to that I was a bank clerk, but that was never going to last.

Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by actors, directors, writers, designers and the brilliant people that surround me on a daily basis in the Uncle Vanya rehearsal room. In the wider community it is the nurses, teachers, paramedics, and those who serve to make our lives safer and better every day. I also feel invigorated when watching my footy team, The Western Bulldogs play well.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I have always tried to guide and encourage younger people to follow their hearts and I have tried to support them where needed. I feel that the work I get to do with the Victorian Actors’ Benevolent Trust goes someway to serving my community.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
In Australia, Port Douglas for the relaxing warm climate and lifestyle. Overseas, I always have a place in my heart for Ireland. I love the culture, the people, the humour and the music.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I like to take people to local bars, coffee shops and restaurants so that they get a local taste of Melbourne. Also the theatre if possible.

What are you currently reading?
I have my head buried in the Uncle Vanya script at the moment. Prior to that it was the music and text of Once the Musical, so it’s been a couple of months since I got to read a book. I love a good Terry Pratchet or one of the classics though.

What are you currently listening to?
I have a large collection of diverse music and I like to listen on random mix, so I never really know what’s coming next. Anything from Beatles to Dr John or the Once soundtrack.

Happiness is?
My wife Judy, friends, good food, great conversation, music, and laughing and smiling together.

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully more of the same. Uncle Vanya at Melbourne Theatre Company until late August. Possibly some travel or film projects after that. What will be, will be.
