Who is Dominica Matthews?
Dominica Matthews is the daughter of 2 loving parents who are no longer with us, sister to 3 siblings, Aunty to 9 nieces and nephews, Fur Mummy to 2 dogs, niece and cousin to too many people to count. She is many things to many people.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I would like to be doing more singing. Singing has always been a passion of mine, even at 3 years old singing into an electrical cord. I do enjoy teaching as a primary school teacher too, something that has come back into my life after a 22 year absence.
Who inspires you and why?
My family and friends, especially my sister, who have jobs and families and are able to juggle it all. I know it is hard. I could never imagine having to juggle it all. I think I would have to be either a mother or a worker. Motherhood never eventuated, so working singer and teacher it is.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Live my life in the best way possible. Help those in need, educate our future adults, bring joy into people’s lives. I hope, in some small way, I am doing that now.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I really like a staycation, to be honest. I always need a holiday from my holiday when I go away. I would like to try a cruise though. I’ve never tried one, but I hope to one day.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I would take them to the Sydney Opera House because (1) I work there and I like to show them that I work in such an iconic location and (2) it’s the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE and everyone who comes to town wants to see it.
What are you currently reading?
I get too tired to read nowadays. When I start, I fall asleep in 5 minutes. My favourite book is Pride and Prejudice though.
What are you currently listening to?
I listen to the radio. GOLDFM is my go to. 80’s, 90’s and now – Queen, P!nk, Adele are some of my favourites.
Happiness is?
Happiness is… who knows! I’m certainly not sad.
What does the future hold for you?
I’m not sure. More singing and teaching, I presume. Seeing my family and friends succeed and be happy. Maybe moving out of Sydney, eventually, to a quieter life.
Dominica stars as Praskovia in Opera Australia’s production of The Merry Widow – which will be presented in the Joan Sutherland Theatre – Sydney Opera House from 8 July – 18 August 2026. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
