On the Couch with Debora Krizak

Debora Krizak AAR On the CouchWho is Debora Krizak?
I’m Debora Krizak – mum to teenage twins, professional bird imitator, and an unapologetic non-foodie. You might’ve seen me on stage playing the deliciously dreadful Miss Hannigan in Annie, where I get to let loose and indulge my love of musical comedy.

Offstage, I wear a few different hats: I’m an audio producer, a funeral celebrant and deeply passionate about my work in aged care support and disability. I thrive on connection – whether I’m singing, storytelling or just having a good old chinwag with friends. Life’s a bit of a circus, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I gave up on making plans for my life a long time ago, and with that came a real sense of surrender and relief. I go wherever life takes me. One thing I have learned is that we are never in control. If I had to do something differently, perhaps I would have studied law or forensics, but at that time of my life, when I was making study choices about my future I had one vision – to make it as an “actress”.

I guess in hindsight I would have moved from Adelaide to Sydney a lot sooner and then travelled to the UK or NYC to further develop my training and career. It’s hard to do all of that when you have a family and your priorities change. I’ve only just gone back to long term touring in a musical as I never wanted to leave my kids for long periods of time.

That was the choice I made at the time, and I don’t regret it. Having had fertility issues for many years and eventually undergoing IVF, having kids hits differently. You don’t take any of it for granted. I feel like I won the lottery the day I was told we were having twins.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by people who reach their goals. I’m inspired by people who do something out of their comfort zone. I’m inspired by people who strive to make a difference in someone else’s life, without the need to broadcast it. I’m inspired by successful people who are still humble and treat everyone equally and with respect. I’m inspired by people who aren’t afraid to admit they still have something to learn.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’d start with people – Champion the underheard and overlooked. Strive for human connection and continue to use my voice for stories that matter – honest, vulnerable, funny, human stories that make people feel seen. Making a difference doesn’t always mean changing the whole world at once. Sometimes it’s as simple (and powerful) as being present, making people laugh and reminding them they’re not alone.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Santorini, Greece. If I lived there, I’d feel like I was on holiday all year round. I love the look of the cave houses and the picturesque white washed walls and let’s face it, who doesn’t love a hearty Moussaka?

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
It would be a crime not to visit the Sydney Opera House and have a sundowner at the Opera Bar whilst people watching and admiring our Harbour Bridge. I’d take them for a stroll around The Rocks and Barangaroo, catch a ferry across to Watson’s Bay and Manly, and of course catch a great show at one of our great cabaret and theatre venues.

What are you currently reading?
I’m not much of a reader (I can’t sit still long enough) but I was gifted Liane Moriarty’s Here One Moment – which is currently lying dormant in my dressing room. I have all good intentions to read it when I get to Melbourne and have a bit of spare time.

What are you currently listening to?
I let the DJ on Spotify create a play list for me every day, based on the music I’ve been listening to. I get to audition new music and songs from artists I’ve never heard before. I must say Pink Pony Club is a bit of an ear worm and great for getting me psyched up and ready for some physical comedy on stage. However, usually I love a bit of yacht rock and easy listening.

Happiness is?
Looking back on your life with no regrets. Being with people who light up when they see you. Great conversations, a cheese platter and good wine. Looking at my kids and giving thanks for their miracle. Having a great partner and family and friends. Sharing my love with animals. Knowing that you’ve helped make a difference in someone’s life and are remembered for it.

What does the future hold for you?
If only I had a crystal ball! I’d love to do a few more shows, playing iconic roles. I’m at the age now where I’m ready and have the life experience to bring something unique to every role I do. I see myself continuing my work in mental health and care support work. I’d love to spend some time in New York, whether it’s for work or a holiday. I’d love a decent holiday. Continue working, contributing and nurturing my little family and being mindful and grateful every day.
