Who is David Williams?
I make theatre. Sometimes this means that I write and direct and perform on stages. And sometimes this means that I load and unload trucks. In between all that I write a LOT of grant applications, pack lunchboxes and ferry our kids around.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Hmmm. Perhaps pursued a more financially-viable career path rather than making theatre? But if I’d done that I would also have so many regrets…
Who inspires you and why?
That’s a tricky one to be honest. I’m inspired by people who are great leaders as well as genuinely good people. People in the arts and public sector who have some degree of power, but try and use it to make a positive difference in the world. The ever-fierce, ever-fearless Jo Dyer and Michael Lynch, my old boss at the Sydney Opera House spring to mind, but there are others.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Try to keep encouraging my kids to believe in and work towards a just and caring society.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I don’t often get to holiday (remember that financially-viable alternate life path?), but I’ve visited NYC twice this century and loved it. It’s a shame that we won’t be able to visit there again for the foreseeable future. Vietnam is also amazing – beautiful people and delicious food.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Well usually I’d insist that visiting friends see some theatre, but apart from that Melbourne has amazing dining destinations. Supernormal is an old favourite – always delightful.
What are you currently reading?
My reading for pleasure is usually science fiction – I love imagining new worlds and embracing ‘what if’s. Currently I’m completing the ninth and final book in The Expanse series, Leviathan Falls by James S. A. Corey.
What are you currently listening to?
This may be off brand, but I’m currently listening to a lot of Taylor Swift. A year ago I only knew 2 of her songs, and now I can sing most of her back catalogue. I blame my niece.
Happiness is?
An excellent gin & tonic with my excellent wife.
