On the Couch with Daniel Leo Stern

Daniel Leo Stern Arts Review On the CouchWho is Daniel Leo Stern?
I’m an acrobat with the show SOAP.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Sometimes I dream about having a really practical job, like being a plumber or an electrician.

Who inspires you and why?
I started diving recently so I’ve been reading about Jacques Cousteau. I’m inspired by his boundless curiosity, his sense of responsibility, the broad reaching scope of his pursuits and the selfish execution of his vision. More than anything, I think he was truly transformed by the sea and it’s inspiring to read about how someone spent their entire life trying to share and protect this magic that they experienced.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Besides hanging by my arms for the entertainment of others in the award winning show SOAP? It’d be nice to be in any one place long enough to invest in a community and be able to volunteer more.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I went to Iceland last year to drive, camp and disconnect for a week. I highly recommend it.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’ve been in Melbourne for two days, so I was kind of hoping someone would have some suggestions for me.

What are you currently reading?
I just finished Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore on the plane to Melbourne.

What are you currently listening to?
Apparently, The Notwist released a live album last year that I missed. I’m catching up on that.

Happiness is?
A hot shower after a double show. Free guacamole on your burrito. A new photo released by NASA. Black coffee. When you take a risk on a new barber and nails your fade and lines up your beard just right. Two for one margarita night. A bowl of ice cream and a documentary narrated by David Attenborough. When Missy Elliot comes on at the club and your girl is the only one who knows all the words to every verse. A skype call that doesn’t disconnect.

What does the future hold for you?
After Australia, the show is heading back to Europe for another season in Germany. It’s looking like I’ll be in the tub for the rest of the year.

Daniel can be seen in the critically-acclaimed SOAP, making its Melbourne debut at The Coopers Malthouse: 30 March – 22 April, as part of the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. For more information, visit: www.comedyfestival.com.au for details.
