On the Couch with Dan Le

Dan Le AAR On the CouchWho is Dan Le?
I’m an Australian pianist, collaborator, and educator dedicated to helping fellow musicians find their voice. I’ve spent many years abroad, but – cliché as it sounds – I still call Australia home.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
It’s hard to imagine doing anything else, but I enjoy the art of practicing and craftsmanship. I often think about exploring fields like building or design since I love visiting museums and galleries while traveling for work. Those industries would definitely interest me.

Who inspires you and why?
I’ve been inspired by many people along my journey. I’m grateful for my supportive family and friends who encouraged me to persist through challenges. The musicians I collaborate with also inspire me, as we learn and grow together. Additionally, the appreciation from audiences is incredibly motivating. Nowadays, it’s wonderful to connect with peers around the world, expanding our artistic horizons.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I hope to continue focusing on the educational aspects of my work, both in performing and teaching. Nurturing talent and providing opportunities for others is very important to me. I believe in giving everybody a chance to shine their light so to speak, and making a difference in the world can be down through small gestures of kindness and support.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I love visiting New York and often stay there for long periods; it feels like a second home. Southeast Asia is another favourite due to its serene beauty, which provides a perfect backdrop for inspiration.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
It depends on which town we’re in! In Sydney, I’d definitely take them to the Sydney Opera House. It’s not just an architectural marvel; the atmosphere and performances are a must-see. In Melbourne, there are fantastic spots for foodies, showcasing the city’s diverse culinary scene.

What are you currently reading?
I’m currently re-reading The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. I read it in high school and now revisiting it for a sense of nostalgia!

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve been enjoying the music of Herbie Hancock lately. I’m excited to see him perform in Melbourne this month; his creativity and mastery of harmony are truly inspiring.

Happiness is?
I wish I knew? Only joking! I guess happiness is found in moments of genuine connection – whether through music, friendships, or nature. Being PRESENT in those moments makes all the difference.

What does the future hold for you?
I hope to continue performing live music and working on innovative projects and collaborations. I’m excited to share my exploration of musical storytelling with audiences. I’m also looking forward to some downtime during the upcoming summer holidays!
