Who is Chris Demos?
I am a Melbourne-based stand-up comedian. I started comedy at the 2018 RAW Comedy competition where I was a Victorian State finalist and after a few hiatuses, I have been consistently performing around Melbourne and Sydney since 2021.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I don’t know if I would really do anything different, maybe just more of what I do now. More comedy adjacent activities, like script writing, some acting, more podcasting and developing new ideas. I also love coming up with jingles for products… but I’m not too sure if there’s actually a market for that.
Who inspires you and why?
My comedy inspiration is Anne Edmonds, I have just always loved her style of comedy. Before I did comedy she was the comedian I made sure I saw at every comedy festival and she has the ability to make me laugh so hard that I have to physically stamp my feet to get it all out.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
It’s so cliche, but honestly, I think the best way to make a difference is to be kind, respectful, accepting and not wasteful.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Ok so I am obsessed with Paris, like to a pathological degree, I blame my repeated viewings of the movie Chocolat, which although not based in Paris is set in France and is giving les vibes Parisiennes. But I think I’m going to have to say Mykonos… I’m Greek and I’m gay, it’s just in my blood! I’ve had some of the most incredible days and nights there with my friends which I would love to relive.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Easily a rooftop bar in the city, Goldilocks or HER would be my first preferences. I just love Melbourne city, it has so much life, there’s always people around and something happening and what better way to watch it all than on a rooftop with a view?
What are you currently reading?
I’m not much of a reader, I know that’s shameful to admit. I’m more of an occasional book-on-tape-er, but even that is rare. So I’m going to adapt this question to be “what reality TV show are you most invested in at the moment” to which I will answer Below Deck.
What are you currently listening to?
The answer to this from now not until forever and for the last decade is Toni Braxton’s He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me. I can listen to that song on repeat and never get sick of it. It’s always in my Spotify wrapped and don’t even get me started on the clip; amazing. Simply put it’s the best song ever recorded and I have no idea why it hasn’t outsold Bing Crosby’s White Christmas. I do supplement listening to it with other songs though, at the moment those songs are mainly female rap by the likes of Latto, Trina, L’il Kim and Ice Spice.
Happiness is?
I love laughter. I think that’s why I got into comedy because I genuinely love to laugh and to make people laugh. So for me happiness is being in a nice bar, or relaxing on a beach or in a nice garden with my friends and laughing at the most random things we can think of.
What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully more shows, more comedy, more festivals and more opportunities. My show this year is called Legs in the Pool and the title is a metaphor for how long I waited , so reluctant to dive in, but now that I have finally taken the plunge I want to see how much further I can go!
Chris presents Legs in the Pool at Tasma Terrace, as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, until 7 April 2024. For more information, visit: www.comedyfestival.com.au for details.
