On the Couch with Chi Nguyen

Chi-Nguyen-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Chi Nguyen?
I was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and I’m an actor/writer currently based in Naarm. I am also a food enthusiast, board game fanatic, karaoke-lover and a Leo (with Taurus rising and Gemini Moon to be exact – can someone draw my astro chart?)

What would you do differently from what you do now?
In an alternate universe, if I’m not working in the arts, I would either be a masseuse or a baker in a cute dessert shop.

Who inspires you and why?
As a child, I grew up watching Thành Loc, a brilliant Vietnamese actor in various children’s shows. I also got to see him in mainstage theatre plays and movies as I got older as well. The joy he spread and the way he can move people through his performance was the foundation that inspired me to become an actor. To this day, he is still one of the most transformative, chameleon-like performers and storytellers I have ever known.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think being an actor is my medium of doing just that. I hope the art I create encourages important conversations to take place, spread positivity and make people feel seen and represented.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I have never been, but I think I would really enjoy visiting Korea, it is definitely on my bucket list. I think the street food would be so bomb, and to be immersed in the culture would be such a wonderful experience. Oh and if I can take photos at famous filming locations pretending to be my favourite K-drama characters, I’d be winning at life.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Even though I am based in Naarm, I didn’t grow up and live here all my life so in many ways I am still exploring the city myself and don’t feel savvy enough to be a tour guide for anyone. But I guess a cute day out could be spent visiting the National Gallery of Victoria, lunch on a rug over at the Royal Botanic Gardens, and a little shopping at Queen Vic Market. Oh and catch an evening show somewhere in the CBD – something is always on!

What are you currently reading?
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy. The controversial title may pique one’s interest in different ways, but what makes it a rapid page-turning read for me is the uniquely witty tone of writing, the generous anecdotes on mother-daughter relationship, identifying and healing from pain, self-love and regrowth.

What are you currently listening to?
I am re-listening to the Mel & Sam podcast when I go on my walks as I have not found a better replacement. I highly recommend checking out this dynamic duo if you haven’t; you’ll laugh, cry, cringe, impromptu sing with them and want to be their friends forever.

Happiness is?
Self love, gratitude and forgiveness practised on a daily basis.

What does the future hold for you?
I am excited to learn and connect more with myself, and discover what more I am capable of. I look forward to giving and receiving love, to keep on following my heart and hopefully make new meaningful connections along the way.
