Charlie Needs Braces is a live looping musical act made up of GuriNgai sisters Charlie and Miri Woods. Known for their energetic and immersive musical landscapes, they weave together storytelling and traditional language to captivate audiences across Australia. The duo has received significant recognition for their work, winning first place in the Upstart Awards in 2022 and the Archie Roach Award for Emerging Talent at the 2023 Music Victoria Awards.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
We’d spend more time on Country, listening, learning, and getting inspired. We are based in Naarm and our Country is on the Central Coast so we try to get up there as regularly as we can. Sitting with our Uncles and Aunties, learning more language, and letting those teachings guide us musically and creatively keeps everything we do strong and grounded. That time on Country always shapes our sound and inspires us in ways nothing else can.

Who inspires you and why?
Country and Culture heavily inspire us as individuals and artists. Continuing to connect with the lands, waterways, wildlife, and learning language deeply guides our music and creative practice.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
We aim to make a difference by preserving our Culture and following in the footsteps of our ancestors by continuing to tell our stories through music. Our songs strengthen connection to Country, Culture, and language, encouraging listening, respect, and care for Country and the wildlife.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Our recent favourite holiday spot would be Croajingalong National Park at ‘Muellers’ campground. We watched the full moon reflecting off the still waters of the inlet, and caught a Bream in the hammock the next morning – it was awesome!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Shotkickers is a fantastic music venue on High Street in Thornbury. Known for supporting local and emerging artists, it showcases a wide variety of genres and remains accessible and welcoming to the community.

What are you currently reading?
Cher: The Memoir (part one) – it’s a really fun and interesting read about the popstars upbringing and individual musical journey.

What are you currently listening to?
Bumpy’s Debut Album Kanana is a great record, and features heartfelt lyrics and beautiful arrangements.

Happiness is?
Waking up slowly to the sound of the bellbirds singing, waves gently crashing, while the kookaburras laugh from the tall gumtrees.

What does the future hold for you?
The future holds more songwriting inspired by a deeper connection to Country, learning more language and stories from our Uncles and Aunties, and using our music to give back to the community by sharing Culture, stories, and connection.
