On the Couch with Bob Phillips

Bob-Phillips-AAR-On-the-Couch-featureWho is Bob Phillips?
At the age of 82, I’m still not really sure! Growing up I dreamed of doing some of the things I eventually did. Including working as a Carnival hand, Cinema projectionist, Producer and Executive Producer for all major Australian TV networks, radio broadcaster and ran a large talent agency – Television Entertainers of Australia. I married a wonderful and talented actress/TV presenter Judy Banks and we had one son Andrew who is also a published author.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I have no real regrets, but would have loved to commence serious writing at an earlier age.

Who inspires you and why?
I spent a lot of my life managing and representing Australian talent and was inspired by some of the more interesting image makers of our time: Brian Epstein, Colonel Tom Parker, Sir Lew Grade. Harry M. Miller (The Dream Merchants!) From a writing perspective, I was inspired by novelist Edna Ferber who wrote GIANT – which became an iconic movie, starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. TV wise: Graham Kennedy (The King of Australian TV) taught me television.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Somehow I would like to use my limited talents to help create a peaceful, caring world which would tackle Climate Change, and bring aid to those battling for survival itself. I believe the media has the power to do this!

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Hard to go past NOOSA – I enjoy the busy culture of Hastings street, the fashions and somewhat bizarre tourists..

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
We usually visit the Australian Centre For The Moving Image (ACMI) at Melbourne’s Federation Square. (My wife, Judy Banks, and I created Australia’s first TV & Media museum on the Mornington Peninsula and many of our exhibits are now on display at ACMI). And of course I proudly show off the splendours of the magnificent Mornington Peninsula to visiting guests.

What are you currently reading?
THE DRY by Jane Harper | LIFE by Keith Richards

What are you currently listening to?
Far too much talkback radio – I am a bit of a news freak! Music wise: I adore Fleetwood Mac and currently revisiting some of the great British Female Pop Divas – Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Blondie etc.

Happiness is?
I think good health, being at peace with yourself and not having to prove yourself.

What does the future hold for you?
I really don’t know! I have a great reliance on my faith and I totally believe in destiny. You should always have another dream in your pocket!
