On the Couch with Blazey Best

Blazey Best Arts Review On the CouchWho is Blazey Best?
Female, actor and singer. A hot mess of contradictions, the worst housewife in Sydney and a wildly inconsistent but loving mother.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I would have paid more attention to the accumulation of wealth. I’ve only just realised how important money is. I wish I’d understood that earlier.

Who inspires you and why?
Jim Henson – for creating such enduring joy.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
If I could just drink less wine, I should be able to put solar panels on my roof.  I could also shout less at my children.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
It’s so hard to choose one because I bloody love holidays but, Royal Davui Island Resort in Fiji is where I went for my honeymoon and it’s magnificent. Hammocks, beach, plunge pool, great food and (with apologies to my children who I love very much) no kids allowed.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I take them to the harbour. It’s daggy and obvious but you can’t beat it, can you? A drink at the Opera Bar? A stroll past the Opera House at sunset? There is nothing wrong with that. But also, you know, Enmore is pretty special too. I might take them to the Stinking Bishops for some cheese and wine or The Gretz for a cocktail.

What are you currently reading?
I’ve just finished Elana Ferrente’s Neopolitan Trilogy. What a beautiful ride! It so exquisitely captures the mysteries and contradictions of friendship.

What are you currently listening to?
My husband is in the middle of reorganising our CD collection so we’re rediscovering old favourites. A bit of Stone Roses here, Rufus Wainwright there, some Alicia Keys with a big dollop of Prince.

Happiness is?
I don’t know… My little boys dancing… all the family plus the dog on the couch… a plate of pork belly that I don’t have to share… the little things.

What does the future hold for you?
Oh God knows… If there is one thing I’ve learned from my life so far, with all its twists and turns, it’s that you can never guess what’s coming. Getting older is a wonderful thing though. As Prince said so well;

“Every day is a winding road,

I get a little bit closer,

every day is a faded sign,

I get a little bit closer to feeling fine.”

Blazey is starring as Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers Live at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre from 21 September 2016, before playing Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. For more information, visit: www.fawltytowerslive.com.au for details.
