On the Couch with Barry Conrad

Barry Conrad Arts Review On the CouchWho is Barry Conrad?
I’m a singer/songwriter and actor, born in South Africa, via New Zealand and now living in Oz.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I always say if I wasn’t in showbiz, I’d be a professional eater haha. Love my food!

Who inspires you and why?
I have a long list of heroes, but really: anyone who doesn’t allow where they’re from, their circumstances or their hardships define who they are and where they’re headed inspires me.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I realise I’m here for more than just myself. I created something called The BCS Movement (formed from my initials) and it’s an acronym for ‘Bring Change Somewhere’. Whether it’s helping someone financially, volunteering for a charity or just offering a smile, change is still change, no matter what your expression of it looks like. It’s about bringing positive change in your own sphere of influence, and that’s what I try to do.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Tough one! I’ve seen some pretty amazing places: New York, Paris, Rome… I’d have to say New Zealand though, because my family live there and I don’t see them enough.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take then to, and why?
To be honest, any spot with great food and vibe. Most of my friends are like me, and love the simple things like amazing food, good convo and vibey atmosphere. The Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour and Bondi Beach are musts though.

What are you currently reading?
My script for Hairspray – the next musical I’m preparing for in between Violet shows!

What are you currently listening to?
A conglomerate of song ideas I’ve recorded into my phone, not all of which are necessarily ace – haha. Working on new material.

Happiness is?
Being able to spend your time how you want with the people you love.

What does the future hold for you?
Wish I knew the answer to that question! Great things, I hope.

Barry is currently starring in Violet – presented by Blue Saint Productions at Chapel Off Chapel until 20 March 2016. For more information, visit: www.violetthemusical.com.au or www.chapeloffchapel.com.au for details.
