On the Couch with Ashleigh Rubenach

Ashleigh Rubenach AAR On the CouchWho is Ashleigh Rubenach?
I’m a 24-year-old musical theatre actress from Sydney. But more interestingly, I’m the girlfriend of Spencer, Mum to two Westie puppies – Hattie and Fergus, an enthusiastic baker, Disney lover and a generally happy and positive person!

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Life or career? Life-wise: I would like to worry less. I’m a big control freak, so it would be nice to let go a little more. Career: I’m not sure! Maybe a lawyer? Or a teacher!

Who inspires you and why?
So many people! My Mum for her strength and endless supply of love and support; and Julie Andrews for being my first and biggest inspiration as an actor.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’m so excited for the day when I have enough money to donate to so many of the incredible charities out there! (Fingers crossed…) In the meantime, I’m attempting to reduce waste and plastic accumulation (Keep cups and stainless steel straws – hooray!). My partner and I have also just delved into veganism to see if we like it, and that is feeling good both in our bodies and what we know we are doing for the environment.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Such a tricky question! I LOVE travelling. My mum is a flight attendant for Qantas, so I well and truly have the travel bug. It has to be a tie between Whistler, Canada (I adore the snow and skiing – the best mix of exercise and holidaying) and New York City (I’m a big, ol’ theatre nerd).

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take then to, and why?
Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk, for sure! It’s so beautiful, and really shows off Sydney in its best light. Similarly, I take them to do the Palm Beach Lighthouse Walk. I grew up on the Northern Beaches, so that area holds a special place in my heart.

What are you currently reading?
At the moment, I don’t have a whole lot of time to sit down and read! So I listen to audiobooks as I drive/commute to and from rehearsals. I’ve just started The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and am loving it so far.

What are you currently listening to?
Same as above, but I also recently had Spotify’s Feelin’ Good playlist playing as I got ready for a show and it delivered! It was mostly a mix of Motown classics and the whole dressing room was feeling GREAT by the time we were on stage.

Happiness is?
Coming home to my little family after a long day of doing what I love and snuggling up on the couch (all 4 of us – me, Spence and the pups) with a cup of tea, chocolate and a documentary (currently watching The Staircase – it’s great!).

What does the future hold for you?
Lots of great things, I hope! I hope to continue to grow my performing arts career, and keep living the wonderful life I’m fortunate enough to have found myself in.

Ashleigh is currently appearing as Allison in Cry-Baby at the Hayes Theatre until 19 August 2018. For more information, visit: www.hayestheatre.com.au for details.
