Who is Andrea Close?
Why is this so difficult to answer? I’m a flawed human being who tries each day to live authentically and improve in some small way and who occasionally succeeds. For a start, I’m a daughter, sister, friend, dog whisperer, nature lover, walker, gardener, friendly introvert, big sleeper, summer lover, bit of a grump, and I work as an actor and public servant.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’m very lucky as I’m able to perform quite regularly, but to earn a living as a full-time actor would be a dream. Every creative says that but very few are so fortunate. Outside of the arts, I’d happily work with dogs.
Who inspires you and why?
Those who are truthful despite the consequences; who are genuinely fair and kind to all; who create great beauty for others to see, hear, and feel; who openly express love and respect; who maintain courage and dignity in the face of great challenges.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think humanity and truth are in real peril. Working on the above inspirational traits would be a good start.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Domestically, Uluru, the surrounding country, and never-ending sky were awe inspiring, spiritually stimulating and overwhelmingly beautiful. Internationally, I had two of the best weeks of my life travelling alone in New York City many years ago.
It’s so familiar because of the film and television we watch that I felt at home as soon as I arrived. It was charged with creative energy – I went to see to a lot of shows, big and small and came home inspired. I’d go back to Uluru tomorrow but can’t see myself ever going to the US again.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
If there’s time, all of them! But I have a real sweet spot for the National Film and Sound Archive. It makes Australia’s film, television, music, and recorded history accessible for people to experience the nation’s stories, culture, and identity across generations.
I love the art deco architecture of the building, the gorgeous courtyard and some of their film anniversary events are just wonderful. The 30th anniversary screening of Muriel’s Wedding with Bjorn Again performing as we danced in the rain was an awesome night!
What are you currently reading?
The Street Sweeper by Australian writer Elliot Perlman. It’s a beautifully written book about 2 people whose lives connect across time, showing how past injustices shape the present and why remembering them matters.
What are you currently listening to?
When I’m in show mode as I am now with Playback (Or, a Play About But Not Starring A Famous Politician), Bruce Springsteen always breaks my heart a little bit and inspires me to be courageous. For me, he reaches a depth of feeling few musicians do.
Happiness is?
A concept that changes throughout life. These days it’s about health, contentment and routine and being aware of the moments of pure joy that occur every day. They can be so tiny and fleeting, but they are there and they add up. You just need to pay attention.
What does the future hold for you?
Gratitude and peace, good health, dogs, friends and family, and hopefully many more years as a performer. That’s one of the best things about acting – you can do it for as long as the mind and body hold out.
Andrea stars as Deborah Grant in Tom Glassey’s Playback (Or, a Play About But Not Starring A Famous Politician) – which will be presented in a world premiere season at The Street Theatre, Canberra, from 23 – 31 May 2026. For more information, visit: www.thestreet.org.au for details.
