On the Couch with Amy Manford

Amy Manford AAR On the CouchWho is Amy Manford?
I’m a classical crossover singer and actress. I’ve toured the world with artists such as Andrea Bocelli and Hauser, but I’m probably best known for performing as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera. I also co-produce and perform in Disney in Concert every few years with my production company, MM Creative Productions.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’d try to live in the moment more. I’m so thankful for all the opportunities I’ve had in my career, but I wish I could pause and truly enjoy each achievement instead of stressing about preparing for the next thing.

Who inspires you and why?
My parents. My mum inspires me creatively – she has such a great eye for detail, which has really pushed me to think outside the box. My dad has a great attitude towards life and somehow manages to stay calm no matter what’s going on. He always reminds me not to take things too seriously, which is so important in this industry.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I love the “pay it forward” idea – a small act of kindness to a stranger can really make a difference. I’m also a huge cat lady, so when life isn’t so busy, I’d love to maybe volunteer at an animal shelter.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I recently went on safari in South Africa and it was life changing.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to and why?
The Bondi to Bronte walk! It’s magical.

What are you currently reading?
I unfortunately don’t have a huge amount of time to read right now as I’m currently learning and memorising so much new music. But my ideal book would be some kind of crime thriller with an unexpected twist!

What are you currently listening to?
I’m listening to podcasts about ancient Egypt – conspiracy theories and all! I’m not sure what’s true, but it’s fun to hear different perspectives on history.

Happiness is?
Getting to wake up and live another day on earth!

What does the future hold for you?
I feel like I’ve already lived so many different lives! As a teenager, I competed in the Australian National Championships for rhythmic gymnastics and then in pole vaulting. Now, in my adult career, I feel incredibly grateful to have achieved so many goals I never thought were possible.

I don’t know what’s around the corner, but I hope to keep performing in live concerts around the world, producing more shows and releasing more music. I’d also love to learn a new skill… though who knows what that will be!

Amy stars with Josh Piterman in An Evening on Broadway – presented by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall – Arts Centre Melbourne from 24 – 26 September 2025. For more information, visit: www.mso.com.au for details.
