On the Couch with Alexis van Maanen

EVITA Alexis van MaanenWho is Alexis van Maanen?
A woman. A performer. An animal lover. An animal and human rights activist. A food lover. An awesome friend and daughter.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
At the moment I’m trying to focus on the present and the future rather than how I could change things I’ve done. I’m constantly aspiring to better myself as a performer and a person. But I guess trying the Chinese delicacy of Silk Worm is something I would happily forget!

Who inspires you and why?
In the music theatre world, it is the performers in the ensemble who inspire me with their work ethic and love of what they do. I have loved also being a part of the ensemble in Evita and finding moments with each person in the show onstage. Those are the little things I will remember. In terms of my general role model, that’d have to be Aussie feminist writer Clementine Ford. She is pure awesome!

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think the most important thing in the world to discuss issues is about raising awareness and opening up conversations about issues that affect us. As a vegan I think that my main focus would be making people more aware of where their food comes from because there is a distinct unawareness of this. I think all people are empathetic and if they knew about the meat and dairy industry their views would change quite quickly and they may reassess their choices. I also think reading is one of the most important tools we have.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Europe! Because you can catch a train to a different country any day!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
First of all my local cafes and opp shops, the proper local experience!

What are you currently reading?
I just finished The Handmaid’s Tale and now onto Boys will Be Boys by Clementine Ford, again she is AMAZING!

What are you currently listening to?
The new album from the Aussie band, Parcels. They have such a great and unique sound, love their music!! And anything that triple J plays.

Happiness is?
The perfect ratio of vegemite to butter on well-cooked toast! Oh – and doing what you love and being with people you love!

What does the future hold for you?
Who knows, but hopefully a lot of performing!

Alexis stars as the Mistress in the Australian production of Evita – which plays at Arts Centre Melbourne from 5 December 2018. For more information, visit: www.evitathemusical.com.au for details.
