Who is Alessia van Brakel?
I am Alessia van Brakel, the Creative Director and Co-Founder of Amalfica Ceramics, which is a family business that prides itself on handmade one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces. Pottery is a skill that has run through my family for generations. I was born in Italy and love to spend time between Perth and my mother’s hometown Vietri sul Mare.
I’m currently studying law full-time and am passionate about criminal justice. I am also working in hospitality and recently participated in Miss Universe Australia – which was an unexpected opportunity that pushed me outside of my comfort zone in a positive way.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I feel as though every experience I have had, whether it be positive or negative, has only taught me more about myself and brought me to the point I am today. Therefore, I don’t think I would do anything differently from what I do now, as it has all helped shape and understand myself more!
Who inspires you and why?
My grandparents are my greatest inspiration because of the way they approach life. I have spent a lot of time with them growing up even though they live on the other side of the world. Their strength, deep bond, and optimism are truly remarkable. They have been married for 76 years, raised six children and now enjoy the love of nine grandchildren.
Throughout their lives, they have faced many challenges, yet they have always remained strong and resilient. No matter the situation, they seem to find solutions, all while keeping a smile on their faces. Seeing this often makes me reflect on how different that mindset can be from what I observe in today’s society.
To them, every day is a gift. Despite growing up without many of the comforts and opportunities that people often have today, they continue to appreciate life in the simplest ways. Their perspective on life has become deeply embedded in me, and I hope to pass that same outlook on to my own children one day.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
As mentioned, I am passionate about the criminal justice system and feel very strongly towards wanting to make a difference, especially towards helping young children and the vulnerable. I hope that once I graduate, I will be able to make a significant contribution in that aspect.
In the meantime, I would love to create a collection for Amalfica where a portion of the proceeds goes towards a charitable cause in that area. For the moment, I feel grateful that through Miss Universe, I was given the opportunity to be able to raise money for disadvantaged children, as it feels very aligned with my values.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
After travelling around the globe, I know there are many amazing places in the world. All unique and special in their own way. However, Italy is Italy! From the alps to the seas, there is always good food, amazing architecture and warm culture that makes it feel as though there is no other place like it (biased I know).
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
When friends visit our hometown of Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast, they discover a hidden gem among the many glamorous towns along the coast. The first place I would take them is the beautiful 1600’s Duomo di San Giovanni Battista.
This Catholic church is famous for its striking dome, which is covered in maioliche – small, handmade ceramic tiles that create a vibrant and intricate design. Standing beside it is the impressive bell tower, which rises 36.5 metres high. It is so prominent that it can be seen even from far out at sea, making it a spectacular sight.
Located in the heart of the town, the church is just as breathtaking inside. When we take friends through it, they are often amazed by the beautifully detailed religious paintings, the two large black marble columns, and the antique altar that adds to the church’s sense of history and beauty.
What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading the Reversal of Fortune. It is written by Alan Dershowitz and follows the appeal of Claus von Bülow, who is convicted of attempting to murder his wife, Sunny. I am just in the early stages but am very intrigued to see how it all plays out.
What are you currently listening to?
My music taste varies greatly, but at the moment I am listening to a lot of Latin songs. They never fail to put me in a good mood.
Happiness is?
Happiness is having a balanced lifestyle. Not overworking (although I am guilty of this), spending time in the sun, being surrounded by good company and, most importantly, eating a big plate of pasta followed by some tiramisu.
What does the future hold for you?
Some exciting new collections will be released in the near future for Amalfica, as well as some more collaborations. We just had Guy Grossi host our launch party at his gorgeous restaurant Garum and have an exciting collaboration in Asia which will come to fruition in the next few months. I am also hoping to be able to return to Italy at some time during all the chaos of the above!
