On the Couch with Aaron Tsindos

Aaron-Tsindos-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Aaron Tsindos?
As much as I would like to provide a really cool and complicated answer, I’ll keep it simple! I’m a Greek, Jewish, Polish guy whose family came here from all over the world. I play DnD (yes that’s right and I feel no shame), enjoy all forms of art and grew up watching Saturday Night Live. Music and culture have had a massive influence on my life.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I would have loved to work in science or medicine. I would have loved to work as a surgeon – I think I would have found that work fascinating and an excellent challenge. Or, if I’m working in scientific research, I might accidentally make a radioactive spider that might happen to bite me and I get super powers…

Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by people who work hard at what they do and for me it’s more about qualities rather than specific people. The whole “well I sort of fell into it and didn’t realise how good I was” thing doesn’t really fly with me. I respect hard work, dedication and commitment BUT not to a level that has negative effects on your life. I also respect risk and courage. It takes a lot to put yourself out there everyday.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Well, there’s a lot. I’d LIKE to do a lot but there’s little I actually have control over. I’d like to add some love, care and compassion to the world in an exciting way. When I was younger, around 14, I saw The Virgin Suicides movie and it really made me think differently about the world. I’d love to make people think differently about the world; open their eyes to things, show them different perspectives by telling amazing stories.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I haven’t really done much holidaying, to be perfectly honest. I get nervous about missing out on work and that fear has kept me from really seeing amazing parts of the world – I know, I need to get out there! That being said, I’d love to go to Cyprus and Ithaca. See some family there and get in touch with some of my history.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love strolling them around Newtown, Enmore and Erskineville. I love those suburbs and there’s so many cool places to eat, drink or catch a show. If they’ve never been to Sydney, I usually take them around Circular Quay and The Rocks as it’s so beautiful.

What are you currently reading?
I just finished Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari and I’m about to start on The Sellout by Paul Beatty. A few friends have started a little book club and The Sellout is our first book.

What are you currently listening to?
Cobra Man. They’re a death disco band and I’m SUPER into them right now. My usual go-tos are Bowie, The Doors, Tame Impala, Meg Mac and some classic hip-hop like Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang or Biggie Smalls. Sometimes Rage Against the Machine or Metallica get in there, depending on how well I’m dealing with industry rejection that day hahah.

Happiness is?
Sitting on a balcony in the sun with the love of my life having an everything bagel with cream cheese and lox with Galaktoboureko for desert and black coffee throughout.

What does the future hold for you?
After Clyde’s at Ensemble Theatre, I’m doing an independent production of City of Angels at the Hayes Theatre with Joshua Robson Productions. I’ve also got a bunch of writing projects in the works that I’d love to get off the ground before the end of the year. Other than that, I hope the future holds a lot of happiness, work and financial success!

Aaron stars as Jason in Ensemble Theatre’s production of Clyde’s by Lynn Nottage – currently playing until 10 June 2023. For more information, visit: www.ensemble.com.au for details.
