NINE to return to the Melbourne stage after 30 years

NINE Michael Cormick and Maria MercedesAfter almost 30 long years, the great musical NINE is returning to Melbourne for a one night charity concert to raise funds for breast cancer patients.

Statistically, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. The Think Pink Foundation provides practical support to breast cancer patients and their families through their state-of-the-art, independent and non-clinical facility, The Living Centre.

Australia’s top female musical theatre talents are coming together to support this special event and charity. The all-star cast includes Lucy Maunder, Alinta Chidzey, Chelsea Gibb, Fem Belling, Claire Lyon and Maria Mercedes. Michael Cormick plays Guido Contini, an Italian film director who on turning 40 is facing a midlife crisis. Directed by Tanya Mitford, the creative team also includes music direction by David Wisken and features a 30 piece orchestra.

The musical is set in 1960s Venice and unlocks a web of Guido’s romantic entanglements. Based on Federico Fellini’s semi-autobiographical film 8½, the original Broadway production opened in 1982 and won five Tony Awards – including Best Musical and Best Score.

After presenting the acclaimed Sondheim on Sondheim at the Melbourne Recital Centre in 2015, NINE builds on the Manilla Street Productions’ reputation for presenting Australia’s leading theatrical talent in new or little performed works.
