National Gallery of Australia Director announces retirement

Dr Gerard Vaughan AMThe Director of the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), Dr Gerard Vaughan AM, has today announced his retirement and will leave the NGA in October next year.

Dr Vaughan, a distinguished public gallery director and internationally recognised scholar, was first appointed to the role in 2014. His leadership, professional experience and diplomacy have delivered strong outcomes for the NGA, including renewed public access to the Gallery’s collection and prominence to the Australian Collections.

Dr Vaughan has also initiated new philanthropic avenues to cultivate private and public support for the NGA, and was instrumental in a continued program of major international exhibitions and partnerships, important acquisitions for the national collection, and a robust program of provenance research.

Dr Vaughan’s dedication and commitment will continue to drive an ambitious program throughout his extended term, which will end in October 2018. An international search for a new Director will commence shortly.
