Music in the Round returns to Abbotsford Convent

ACF Music in the Round Tristan LeeAfter two wonderful years, Music in the Round returns to the Abbotsford Convent this Father’s Day – Sunday 4 September 2016.

Presented by the Abbotsford Convent Foundation (ACF), Music in the Round will showcase Australia’s leading and emerging classical musicians in the Convent’s unique heritage spaces, presenting its largest program to date, with 27 musicians, performing 12 concerts, across four historic venues; so audiences will be invited to curate their own unique concert experience.

In 2016, the event welcomes back some of Australia’s foremost classical musicians; including Ian Munro, William Hennessey and Howard Penny. We will also see and hear the return of the energetic Arcadia Quintet, along with the dynamic Melbourne Piano Trio and the talented Tristan Lee.

The ACF warmly welcomes a series of new faces; including the new Artistic Director of ANAM, Nick Deutsch and the innovative Syzygy Ensemble. The ACF is also excited to present the Music in the Round Young Performer – a new initiative showcasing an emerging, talented musician under the age of 18. Yebin Yoo will present three works by JS Bach, Ysaye and Kreiseler.

This year’s program by Artistic Director Chris Howlett transcends 300 years of music, from J.S. Bach to Gordon Kerry, bringing together much-loved composers with rare and contemporary works. Once again, there will be a free outdoor program and children’s concerts plus an array of delicious food options. A perfect way to spend the day with your dad!

First taking place in 1972, Music in the Round was the Australian Musicians’ Guild’s annual showcase for Australian chamber musicians. It relocated to the Abbotsford Convent in 1977, after debuting at Monsalvat and then Werribee Mansion. It delighted audiences at the Convent for nine years, until 1985, when State Government planning decisions required the venue.

In 2014, the Abbotsford Convent Foundation brought this event back to life as part of its tenth birthday celebrations to become a key event in Melbourne’s classical music calendar.
