Mona’s annual summer festival of music and art, Mona Foma, will again follow a dual-city model in 2022, with two weekends of merriment in Launceston from 21-23 January and in nipaluna / Hobart from 28 – 30 January 2022.
Known for its eclectic and site-specific programming – past festivals have seen a psychedelic, laser ghost train at Penny Royal Adventures, a treasure hunt at Hinsby Beach, a sellout Flaming Lips gig on the lawns of Mona, a giant puppet show at the iconic Cataract Gorge, and a live radio club night broadcast from the top of kunanyi / Mount Wellington – Mona Foma will host events in venues across both cities over consecutive weekends, as well as some festivities in between.
“Delivering a festival in two cities in January 2021 felt like nothing less than a miracle,” said Brian Ritchie, Artistic Director, Mona Foma. “Come January 2022 we’ll do it again and promise another festive burst of euphoria and unforgettable moments. Our team is working on strange new venues, indefatigable creativity, cultivation of powerful talent and the unpredictable.”
Mona Foma welcomes the opportunity to continue its work with the local community in 2022 after this year’s hyperlocal Tasmanian celebration, as well as embracing artists and audiences from further afield should circumstances allow.
Tickets to Mona Foma 2021 sold out in record time, with enthusiastic uptake in both the north and south of lutruwita / Tasmania. As per the 2021 program, Mona Foma 2022 will be carefully curated to adapt to changing circumstances and public health directives to ensure the safety of punters, performers and staff.
The festival will run from Friday 21 January through to Sunday 30 January 2022, with music and art taking place over two weekends – first in Launceston (Friday 21 – Sunday 23 January) and then in nipaluna / Hobart (Friday 28 – Sunday 30 January).
The full 2022 program will be announced 3 December, with tickets on sale 6 December. For more information and to sign up to the mailing list for festival and program updates, visit: www.monafoma.net.au for details.
