Few artists have left as indelible a mark on popular culture as Michael Jackson, and few musicals manage to capture that legacy with the energy, style, and theatrical flair than that of MJ The Musical.
With a book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage and direction and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon OBE, this superbly produced jukebox musical is a visual and musical feast that both honours Jackson’s artistry and brings fresh theatrical invention to his story.
Since premiering on Broadway, MJ The Musical has been seen by over 5 million people world-wide. It received 10 Tony Award nominations, winning four: Best Choreography, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. In addition, it recently garnered three Olivier Award nominations, winning for Best Theatre Choreographer – proving itself to be one of the most exciting musicals of recent years.
Set in 1992, the show unfolds in the rehearsal room for Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour, framed by an MTV journalist granted behind-the-scenes access. It’s a clever device: the timeframe sidesteps the controversies that later shadowed Jackson’s life, while giving audiences a privileged look at his relentless creative process and collaborative drive. What emerges is a portrait not of the tabloid figure, but of the visionary artist who reshaped the sound and spectacle of modern pop.
The musical journey begins in familiar territory with the youthful exuberance of the Jackson 5. Enduring classics like I Want You Back and ABC radiate warmth and nostalgia, before the narrative moves into Jackson’s solo career, where the catalogue of hits arrives in breathtaking succession.
The irresistible groove of Billie Jean, the explosive energy of Beat It, the cinematic precision of Smooth Criminal, and the unifying anthem Black or White all land with electrifying impact. Thriller is a showstopper, its transition staged with such jaw-dropping invention that it rightly draws audible gasps. The evening closes with Man in the Mirror, a moment of communal uplift that reminds audiences of the timeless power of Jackson’s message.
Wheeldon’s award-winning choreography is central to the show’s success. It pays homage to Jackson’s signature moves, while weaving in the influences that shaped him, from Fred Astaire and Bob Fosse to the Nicholas Brothers. The result feels both familiar and freshly theatrical, a thrilling fusion of homage and reinvention.
Visually, the production is a knockout. Derek McLane’s scenic design and Peter Nigrini’s dynamic projections shift seamlessly between rehearsal spaces, memory, and fantasy. Natasha Katz’s lighting heightens every dramatic beat, from moody intimacy to stadium-sized spectacle, while Paul Tazewell’s dazzling costumes capture both authenticity and glamour. Gareth Owen’s precise sound design ensures every note and beat lands with clarity, supported by a top-tier band under the control of music director Michael Azzopardi.
At its centre, Ilario Grant delivers a commanding turn as MJ, balancing charisma, vulnerability, and the perfectionism that drove Jackson’s artistry. Liam Damons impresses in his professional debut as teenage Michael, while William Bonner, who played Little Michael on opening night, brought youthful charm and confidence.
Josslynn Hlenti Afoa adds depth as Katherine Jackson, Conlon Bonner shines in the dual roles of Tito Jackson and Quincy Jones, and Derrick Davis provides gravitas as both Joseph Jackson and tour director Rob. Penny McNamee anchors the narrative with inquisitive warmth as MTV journalist Rachel. The Jackson brothers, Xavier Gibson (Marlon), Kyle Kavully (Jackie), G Madison IV (Randy), and Loredo Malcolm (Jermaine), capture the complex dynamic of siblings living in the orbit of Michael’s extraordinary talent.
More than a tribute concert, this is a theatrical experience that captures the energy, artistry, and collaborative spirit of a once-in-a-generation talent. For Michael Jackson fans, it is an unmissable celebration. For newcomers, it is an exhilarating reminder of why the King of Pop became a legend.
