MICF: Becky Lucas – Um, Support Me?!

MICF19 Becky LucasWhy the pained smile from Brisbane stand-up comic Becky Lucas? Could it be anxiety over what sort of crowd she’ll get at her shows? Maybe, as her MICF guide argument didn’t really support the plea of her title: Um, Support Me?!

In the last year Lucas has featured in the MICF Gala, recorded some comedy specials, and gotten banned for life from Twitter. Lucas, “29 going-on 30”, has often done a good job given a spot of a few minutes in showcases. I was interested to see what she would do with an hour.

Lucas made a (largely well-received) “joke” that – unlike offerings from other comics – this show has no cohesive story. Further, there were hardly decent segues between bits. If you like comedy that deals with big ideas, and appreciate the craft that goes into a narrative, this probably isn’t the show for you.

This aside, Lucas has a confident, brisk delivery, and she earned some good payoffs by aiming snappy zingers at herself. She clearly knows her target demographic well.

Her material, including bits on relationship break-ups and mobile phones, often earned loud laughter – a notable achievement in a 6.00pm Monday show. If this audience is anything to go by, 20-somethings in particular will be very happy to support Lucas and her material on distractions and petty irritations.
