Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid

Malthouse Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid photo by Andrew GoughFollowing her recent critically-acclaimed season at the Sydney Festival, Meow Meow brings her wild mix of drag, chanson and performance art to the Malthouse Theatre in Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid for a strictly limited season from 29 January 2016.

Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid is a decidedly un-Disney cabaret, where sexy spectacle drips into a bittersweet take on what constitutes a ‘happy ending’. Join post-postmodern diva Meow Meow as she raucously subverts Hans Christian Andersen’s mermaid tale of teen self-sacrifice, salvation and seduction.

A world of old sea shanties and hymns from the Titanic will give way to a glittering array of contemporary originals, as she sails to a land of altered hearts, minds and body parts.

In part two of the ‘little’ trilogy that began with Meow Meow’s Little Match Girl in 2011, the cat is back, and she’s not afraid to go into the water! This operatic and outrageous sea ride features a posse of real life princes. Forget the fairy tale you thought you knew, this rollicking affair is a fairy tale gone rogue.

Meow Meow is an award-winning Australian-born actress, dancer and cabaret performer. Her unique brand of performance art exotica has hypnotised, inspired and terrified audiences globally with trail-blazing sell-out seasons in New York’s Lincoln Center, Berlin’s Bar Jeder Vernunft, London’s Apollo Theatre and the Sydney Opera House.

A regular guest in the Olivier Award-winning La Clique and La Soirée on the West End and off-Broadway, she has also performed with the L.A. and London Philharmonics, and continues to collaborate with Barry Humphries.

Her accolades include numerous Green Room Awards, Helpmann Theatre Awards, the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Prize, and the New York Franklin Furnace Performance Art Award, and her solo works have been curated by David Bowie, Pina Bausch and Mikhail Baryshnikov amongst others.

“This saucy romp through Andersen’s aquatic fable is cabaret perfection.” – Limelight Magazine
