Bringing people together through the power of music, the Melbourne Recital Centre will launch a new community initiative in 2025, Choir 3006.
Led by acclaimed choral conductor Renee Heron, this innovative program offers weekly lunchtime drop-in singing sessions designed to help people escape their daily routines and connect with others in their community.
“Being in a choir is a wonderfully transformative experience!” says Renee Heron. “The joy that comes from singing together gives us a sense of belonging to something greater than oneself.”
“The shared purpose, human connection and the beauty of singing in harmony with others is something primal and unique to humans. It also gives us a safe place to express ourselves and helps us to preserve cultural traditions.”
“One of the best parts of singing is that it releases endorphins which are our brain’s ‘feel-good’ chemical which means that choir is an all round mood booster too!” said Heron.
This initiative addresses the growing concern of urban loneliness and offers a unique solution through accessible community music-making. The lunch-hour timing makes it particularly convenient for local workers and residents to participate without disrupting their daily schedules.
Choir 3006 kicks off on Wednesday 5 February 2025. No music training or experience necessary!
