Stagebugs Productions will bring Mel Brooks’ Tony Award-winning musical comedy Young Frankenstein to Theatre Works, St Kilda, this October.
Based on the beloved comedy film by Mel Brooks, Young Frankenstein is a monstrously funny musical filled with unforgettable characters, outrageous comedy, spectacular musical numbers and the legendary songs that have made it a Broadway and West End favourite.
When brilliant New York brain surgeon Dr Frederick Frankenstein inherits his infamous grandfather’s Transylvanian castle, he reluctantly travels to Transylvania, only to discover that perhaps the family business isn’t quite finished after all.
With the help of Igor, Inga and the formidable Frau Blücher, Frederick embarks on an unforgettable scientific adventure where chaos, comedy and classic Mel Brooks humour collide.
Directed by Christian Cavello, this new Melbourne production brings together a strong ensemble cast, led by Josh Direen as the hapless Dr Frederick Frankenstein. Joti Van Carlos Gore takes on the role of The Monster, with Alexander Glenk as the irrepressible Igor and Juliet Nicolson as Inga.
Britni Leslie plays Frankenstein’s glamorous fiancée Elizabeth Benning, while Belinda Jenkins brings her presence to the formidable Frau Blücher. Shannon Foley completes the principal cast in the dual roles of Inspector Kemp and the Hermit, promising plenty of comic energy and character-driven mayhem.
The are ably supported by a stellar ensemble including Campbell Bonello, Daniel Baker, Bryn Monk, Oliver Palamara, Nathan Fernandez, Morgan Dooley-Axup, Hanna Harvey, Georgina Scott and Ana Kerei Watts.
The accomplished creative team includes David Butler (Musical Supervisor), Geoff Scarlett (Musical Director), Claire Robinson (Choreographer), Damian Jones (Set Designer), Jason Bovaird (Lighting Designer), Thomas Strode (Sound Designer) and Noah Gullan (Assistant Director).

With Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks, and a Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, Young Frankenstein features the musical numbers The Transylvania Mania, He Vas My Boyfriend, and the iconic Puttin’ on the Ritz, promising audiences a spectacular night of musical theatre.
Silly, sparkling, and shamelessly over-the-top, Young Frankenstein is a love letter to old-school horror, vintage showbiz, and the art of a perfectly timed punchline.
