Max Riebl – The Great Pretender

The Butterfly Club Max Riebl The Great PretenderA breathtaking performance that reimagines and unites the power of early pop with the genius of baroque, Max Riebl presents The Great Pretender at The Butterfly Club from 8 November 2017.

The Great Pretender showcases the ethereal countertenor voice of Max Riebl, who combines his mastery as a baroque musician with the pure vocal power and authenticity of an emerging pop artist – Garland, Bach and Morrissey collide and the result isn’t fusion, it’s chemistry.

Wittily confronting his inner battle between artistic obedience and disobedience, Riebl rebels against the puritanical authority of classical music and embraces an unruly, alternative world of music, which seeks purity and truth over boundaries, judgement and austerity. Accompanied by virtuosic musicians and unique, electrifying arrangements, The Great Pretender unveils a new sound and concept.

Max Riebl has appeared throughout Australia, Europe and the UK with baroque ensembles such as the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, La Cetra Baroque Orchestra, the London Handel Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria as well as a number of symphony orchestras and contemporary ensembles.

He has performed in the Sydney Recital Center, the Melbourne Recital Center and Hamer Hall, the Forum, the Vienna Musikverein and the Royal Albert Hall. He studied baroque performance at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Gerd Turk.

Riebl has received top prizes in the 2017 Herald Sun Aria, the IFAC Australian Singing Competition, the London Handel Competition, the Chicago International Classical Singer Competition and the Royal Philharmonic Arias.
