Developed through Red Stitch’s INK program, Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre presents the World Premiere of LUKE, a dark, winding examination of truth and regret.
LUKE is a decades-spanning, form-bending and proudly queer Australian story from Melbourne-based playwright Angus Cameron, opening on Friday 18 September.
Directed by Iain Sinclair (West Gate, A View from the Bridge, Berlin), LUKE unfolds over one pivotal night in 2007, where Chris, fresh out of high school, drinks, argues and philosophises with his two older teacher friends. When a buried secret begins to surface, the night takes an irreversible turn and lives are rewritten forever.
Featuring Red Stitch ensemble members Olga Makeeva (Stop. Rewind, Good People, Wittenberg) and Dion Mills (Conspiracy 365, Stingers, All My Love), and Will Lonsdale (Afterglow, Unprompted, Orestes) in his debut with the company, this provocative and unflinching play is contemporary theatre at its boldest.
“LUKE was inspired by the entanglement of memory, identity, trauma, and storytelling. It’s an ode to the magic of mentors and the consequences of silence,” said Playwright Angus Cameron.
“I want to interrogate the culture of the past 20 years through the lens of both the limitations and possibilities of creativity. I’m so grateful to be working with a company dedicated to nurturing talent and taking theatrical risk.”
The creative team include set and costume designer Nathan Burmeister, lighting designer Nik Pajanti and sound designer Ethan Hunter.
