LIGHTSCAPE returns with new light installations at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

Lightscape-MelbourneLightscape – an extraordinary, after-dark experience at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, is back with a brand-new trail from 16 June 2023.

Be mesmerised by an eight-metre sphere filled with over 20,000 moving LEDs, singing trees and a flickering fire garden amongst colour-changing installations, soundscapes and large-scale illuminated sculptures.

Experience the new two kilometre trail around the lake and celebrate the beauty of nature after dark. These include new colour-changing installations, large-scale illuminated sculptures and surprises along the way in this all-new experience featuring over 100,000 tiny lights.

“Designing and building a light trail for a second time allows us to bring new and exciting installations into a familiar setting – now we know the possibilities, so it’s even more thrilling than the first time. Culture Creative is proud to produce Lightscape in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Victoria and Sony Music,” said Zoe Bottrell, Managing Director of Culture Creative Ltd.

Due to popular demand, the Winter Cathedral that was a crowd favourite when it debuted last year will be returning but will be the only repeated light installation, with all other experiences brand new to Melbourne. The very popular Lightscape food trucks and pop-up bars will also be returning with new food options to delight the hungriest of visitors.

Following enormous successes in the UK and US, Lightscape, created in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment, made its debut in Melbourne earlier in 2022 and was an overwhelming success, quickly becoming a highlight of Melbourne’s winter activities.

The event was developed at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the UK 11 years ago and has been an overwhelming success since, with more than two million people experiencing the illuminated trails at various venues last season.

Since its inception, Lightscape has been showcased at botanic gardens, National Trust and UNESCO World Heritage sites across the UK and US to great acclaim.

Lightscape was an overwhelming success in 2022 and we are delighted that this world-class event is returning to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne so that Victorians can again enjoy our Gardens in a whole new light,” said Professor Tim Entwisle, Director and Chief Executive, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

“This is an incredible opportunity to see music and light intertwine for a unique immersive experience in Melbourne,” said Vanessa Picken, Chair & CEO, Sony Music – Australia and New Zealand. “I am looking forward to seeing these multi-sensory sensations come to life.”
