The highly anticipated release of what is already an industry award-winning film and slated as the best Australian film in years, Kangaroo Island will officially launch in cinemas across the country on Thursday 21 August 2025.
The feature film will celebrate this milestone with a red-carpet premiere tonight (Wednesday 20 August) in Adelaide at the newly restored Piccadilly Theatre, ahead of its national cinema release the following day.
This beautifully made and richly rewarding film is the directorial debut of Timothy David, written by Sally Gifford, both living in South Australia. It boasts a stellar cast including Rebecca Breeds (Clarice), Erik Thomson (How To Please A Woman), Adelaide Clemens (The Great Gatsby) and Joel Jackson (Jungle).
Receiving its World Premiere status at the Adelaide Film Festival as the coveted Closing Night film, it has rolled out a preview campaign over the last few weeks has already earned critical and audience acclaim and rapturous response from countless sold-out and oversubscribed screenings.
Kangaroo Island follows Lou Wells (Breeds) who has hit rock bottom after a promising start to her Hollywood career. Now broke and aimless, she reluctantly accepts a plane ticket from her estranged father, Rory (Thomson) to return home to South Australia’s ruggedly beautiful Kangaroo Island.
As years of unresolved tension start to resurface, the reunion turns even more complicated when Lou and her sister Freya (Clemens) learn about Rory’s secret. Combining pathos, humour, and relatable themes, Kangaroo Island brings one of the world’s most unique and must-see destinations to the big screen.
“We wanted to create a bold and philosophical film that explores our reality that life is as beautiful as it is traumatic,” said director Tim David. “And how people deal with that determines the quality of their life and relationships.”
“The film has a lot of depth in contrast to the majority of cinema today where too many mistakes edgy subject matter for interesting story.”
Kangaroo Island showcases not only a powerful human story but also the natural splendour of one of the world’s most unique destinations.
