Set to delight and inspire Melburnian art aficionados, shoppers and city-goers alike, the free art exhibition has popped up under Melbourne Central’s iconic cone and will be on display until 10 January 2024.

The visionary behind the spectacle, Brolga, is a globally acclaimed Australian pop-style artist and illustrator recognised for his striking wheat pastes, street art, and murals on the streets of New York.

When reflecting on the vision behind Ernie, Brolga says he drew on his years traveling the world and living abroad, while also seeking inspiration from Melbourne Central’s location in the heart of Melbourne’s vibrant CBD.

“With Ernie, I was excited to get back to my Aussie roots while staying true to my signature style. Melbourne is a cultural melting pot of creativity and eclectic style, so my goal was to create a character that represents this,” said Brolga.

“Often mistaken for either a rabbit, a kangaroo, or some type of long-eared dog, Ernie doesn’t mind. Unfazed by the ambiguity, he embraces his creative nature,” added Brolga.

This must-see Melbourne installation will be complimented by a custom MC x Brolga Holiday Gift Shop where shoppers can score exclusive Ernie merchandise including themed hoodies, hats, postcards, mugs and more.

Running until 23 December, shoppers can collect items by simply shopping in-centre – the more you spend, the more merch you unlock!

“We are so excited to bring Brolga back to his Melbourne roots and see Ernie come to life at Melbourne Central over the holiday season,” said Melbourne Central Senior Marketing Manager, Sara Aiezza.

“At Melbourne Central, art inspires so much of what we do, as does our city and its people, and Brolga’s Ernie perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Melbourne in Summer.”

Ernie is currently on display at Melbourne Central until 10 January 2024. For more information, visit: www.melbournecentral.com.au for details.
