An exciting new Australian musical about John Flynn, the man who founded the Flying Doctor in Australia in 1927, Now Be Resourceful presents an industry showcase of In Like Flynn at the MC Showroom on 25 & 26 August 2017.
In an age where men still travelled on camels, a young padre dreams of wireless and aeroplanes, whilst outrunning the wings of death in the vast expanse of the Outback Australia. In Like Flynn explores the conflict between a young visionary bringing change and a conservative establishment wanting to cling to the status quo… the stakes couldn’t be higher!
Individual lives and whole communities hang in the balance awaiting the outcome of a flying doctor flight. Will the young visionary overcome the technological limitations of his time and the human inertia of his board? And how long will the woman he loves wait for him as he pursues his dream?
The idea for the musical was first conceived during a visit Geraldine made to Alice Springs around 2000. Looking for a book to read on the plane, she wandered into the bookshop at the Alice Springs airport where she spotted a copy of Ivan Rudolph’s book, John Flynn; Of Flying Doctors and Frontier Faith.
Intrigued, Geraldine began reading and soon found herself dreaming about presenting this incredible tale on stage. Thus began a long journey into learning the art of music theatre writing, building a team and putting in the hours to get the musical to where it is today.
Shortly after this, Geraldine met Craig Bryant and they talked about working together on an arrangement basis. In time this developed into a co-writing partnership, with chief vocalist Mezz Coleman, eventually joining the writing team as well. A concert version of the musical was presented on the Gold Coast earlier this year.
In Like Flynn will feature a stellar local cast including Nigel Huckle, Scott MacKenzie, Jensen Overend, Calie Paterson, Daniel Roper, Megan Scolyer-Gray, Olivia Smith, Caitlin Spears, and Chloe Towan.
