Gold Star Bisexual is a delightful work of stand-up comedy from Steph Dogfoot. It’s also a biopic made flesh as Steph describes her life – with accompanying images and evidence.
Over an entertaining near-hour, Steph subjects herself to a charming bout of self-examination – including growing up in Singapore, studying in Ohio, and traveling further to London – attempting to chart the path her bisexuality has taken from adolescence to the present.
There are perilous haircuts, awkward encounters, lesbian covens, and seemingly a lot of group sex for someone who considers herself a virgin. More conversation than routine, Steph is an excellent storyteller.
The humour is genuine, the laughs more than earned, and well as a few rueful chuckles and nods at some of her reminiscences. It’s nice that as queer people, for how individual our stories are, we do find those small shared observations and understandings.
Steph’s strength is her authenticity, and her show draws you in from it’s unassuming beginning to a final photo with the most terrifying Mary Poppins cosplay you will ever witness. Gold Star? 4.5/5 stars at least!
