Gender is a Scam and I am Winning

MFF23-Josh-Cake-photo-by-Nick-RobertsonAn uplifting musical comedy playing with intersections between race, nationality, and gender. Josh Cake presents Gender is a Scam and I am Winning at the Festival Hub: Trades Hall – Corner Store, as part of the 2023 Melbourne Fringe Festival from 18 – 22 October.

The best joke Josh Cake ever told was during a terrorist attack in Paris in 2015. Josh will tell this joke, other jokes, and sing songs containing jokes.

Josh Cake (any pronouns) has external identities of brown, Australian, man. All of these are scams and Josh feels no internal connection to any of them. While the hour-long show deals with heavy themes, the show is anything but.

Josh – a high-energy stand-up comedian and musician who thrives in structured chaos – sweeps the audience into a joyful, irreverent, uplifting journey of questioning external narratives. Ask who you really are on the inside, and you might like the answer.

Gender is a Scam and I am Winning inspects the inconsistencies of how external systems interfere with the internal sense of self.

Josh Cake has performed in Melbourne Fringe since 2014, and has written music for over 50 shows at Melbourne Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Josh’s past credits include A Death By Chocolate (2014), Foreign Woman (2018), Three Guards on Manus Island (2019), and The Night Cap (2022).

Josh makes music, comedy, and poetry for contexts ranging from Canadian spoken word to Icelandic cabaret, from US video games to Chinese university workshops, from TEDx to the ABC.

The winner of the Best Musical Comedian award from Humour Nouveau, the Best Cabaret award from the Weekly Beckett, and the Best Comedy award from the Degraves Awards, Josh has held performance residencies at venues including Un Tubo (Italy), Aux Trois Mailletz (France), and the National Gallery of Victoria (Australia).

Josh eats cake for breakfast every day!
