Fringe World: Club Swizzle Sizzles

Club Swizzle - photo by Prudence UptonClub Swizzle’s atmosphere is a mixture of a classy, sexy jazz club. With a bar in the middle of the performance area it is quickly and expertly transformed into a performance area. Parts of the bar are removed and chairs and tables are acrobatically thrown around to make room for further patrons to sit and enjoy the show.

Reuben Kaye as our MC for the evening manages to deliver X rated comedy with class and an abundance of laughs. As he sashes up and down the catwalk bar dressed in an array of colourful outfits, giant eyelashes and bright lipstick, he was able to coerce audience members to compete in a pole dancing competition. The night I was there, Kaye assisted with a proposal. With a ‘yes’ to the proposal the couple inadvertently continued to provide entertainment as they congratulated each other during the remainder of the performance!

The Club Swizzle boys perform some miraculous moments as they execute contortion, acrobats and high flying feats. A highlight was the human champagne fountain which witnessed one performer hand standing on another while another artist, suspended from the ceiling, poured a bottle of champagne into a stack of glasses.

Laurie Bergen’s (Luscious Lush) take on the ancient art of striptease had the audience talking long after the show ended.  Amy G, from the United States of America, where they currently have one of the most newsworthy presidents for all the wrong reasons, performs the American National Anthem on a Kazoo.

How she manages to get the air into the instrument is a question that will have you gasping and laughing while asking yourself, “Should she be doing that? Should I be laughing? Is that hygienic?” She also does an amazing job roller skating on the makeshift bar without landing in the audience.

Club Swizzle is part cabaret, circus and burlesque all performed with a jazz club vibe that will provide plenty of hilarity and fun. Don’t miss this outrageous night of quality cabaret. Get there early and grab a drink at the bar. Club Swizzle has an extended season until Sunday 4 March. Grab your tickets now!
